RIGHT TO SELF REPRESENTATION
1st Dist.
People v. Leeper (November
17, 2000) 5th div. (CHAPMAN) Affirmed.
Trial court did not deprive defendant of right to self
representation in felony trial for driving while license revoked
where the first request was made by defendant at time jury selection
was to commence. Further, defendant was not denied effective
assistance of counsel given the low level of cooperation he provided
his attorney. In addition, court properly refused to give the
defendant credit against his sentence for time spent in custody of
Dept. of Corrections for parole violation, since this sentence is to
run consecutively with balance of sentence associated with parole
violation.
